One thing many couples do not realize is how much actually goes into preparing the groom for the wedding day (this is also something I did not realize either until afterwards). Since having Jason as my second I have come to learn actually how much goes into prepping your groom for the wedding day. In this Blog, Jason and I sat down together and we compiled a list to things to do to prepare your groom (or if you are a groom yourself) for your wedding day.
Shoes: If you are wearing dress shoes, buy a cleaning/shoe shinning kit for them and make sure your shoes are shined the day/night before your wedding day. When you buy a kit though make sure the color is the same color or as close to the same color of your shoes as possible, you do not want to put black polish on brown shoes!
Pocket squares: If you are wearing a pocket square, make sure the pocket square goes with your suit/wedding colors.
Socks: This might seem like a strange one to pay attention to but if you are wearing a suit with dress shoes, you MUST wear long socks. DO NOT I repeat DO NOT show up on your wedding day wearing crew socks (aka ankle socks) with dress shoes. Now if you’re going for something silly/sentimental/or inside joke with your groomsmen, you can wear it of course but make sure they are long socks. Short socks do not look good with a suit or tux, it also will not look good in photos.
Matchy Matchy: Another thing you might not think about is your belt, shoes and (if you’re wearing a leather) watch band should match. Your leather colors should be matching or close to matching. you do not want to show up with a black belt and brown shoes.
The Shirt: This has quite a few things to it so lets jump in!
- The Neck: If you are wearing a bow tie, a regular tie, or even a bolo tie make sure your sure fits comfortably around your neck. But comfortably with and without the tie, it’s best to shop for them at the same time.
- Cuff Links: If you plan on wearing cuff links or gifting cuff links, make sure the shirt has holes made for cuff links. Jason had to help make some cufflink holes for some grooms/groomsmen and that definitely took quite a bit of time. Save yourself the time wedding morning and have a shirt that has holes made for cufflinks, (I did not realize there was a difference in shirts until Jason told me).
- The Undershirt: When looking for something to wear under your dress shirt make sure you buy a WHITE and BREATHABLE undershirt. Do not wear a tank top under your dress shirt you will be able to see the tank top lines through the shirt. Not only will and actual undershoot look good it will also protect your dress shirt from any pit stains so you can wear your shirt again after your wedding (one of the many luxuries of being a groom!
Deodorant: This might seem like something you do not think about but when looking for a deodorant for your wedding, make sure you wear a gel deodorant on your wedding day. We want to avoid ANY possibility of pit stains, your undershirt will definitely help deter pit stains but to be extra extra safe its best to wear gel deodorant as well.
Emergency Kit: Now for my brides I always recommend a little emergency kit just in case of a little something (makeup, sewing kit, Hair spray ect.) but should a groom have an emergency kit? 100% Yes! What should the grooms kit consist of?
- Breath mints/strips
- Palmade or Clay (Make sure they are travel sized or you out them in a small container)
- We have noticed these products keep your hair in place better than hairspray, especially on windy days.
- Sewing Kit
- Extra Socks
- Extra Tie/bow tie
- Tide Sticks or Tide wipes
- Extra Pocket square
- A travel Sized Version of your cologne
- If your cologne doesn’t have a travel size or a small sprayer bottle you could always get one off amazon and fill it up yourself. Here’s the link to the mini sprayer!
I know we tend to joke that the wedding day is all about the bride but we have to remember that the groom is just as important, if your other half isn’t prepared then things can get delayed or might not go as planned. We love our grooms and want to make sure they look just as great as their brides on their wedding day, and also to be prepared if there’s a little hiccup. We hope this helped in one way for another!
If there’s something else you think we should add please let us know in the comments! Until Next time!
