Whether you are looking for a place to take your bridal portraits or couples photos, we know just a few places you might like! In this guide we will include locations you can shoot at for free as well as locations you must get a permit for. We will also give you tips on how to find your own unique photo locations.
With each location we will list the pros, the cons, and if there is a cost or not. We want your photos to represent YOU and the location is just an emphasis on that representation.
Here in Michigan we have 6 months of winter, 1 minute of spring, 5 Seconds of Summer (all my 5SOS girlies where you at?) and 1 month of fall. If you have lived here for a good amount of time you know that we love our time outside and we take advantage of our warm months. Here are a few beautiful options for you!
If you live in the Ypsilanti are you probably know about North Bay park or the park with the bridges. North bay is located off Huron Road. The park sits right next to/on Ford lake and on the lake it has bridges connecting small Islands to the mainland. There is a entrance fee ($5 for a day pass) but no fee to pictures.
Maybury State park is one of the unique gems we found for beautiful photos. With no entrance fee this beautiful park offers a beautiful lake, bridges, fields with tall grass, and also a farm! This gorgeous park is also a few minutes from downtown Northville for you to grab a bite to eat or coffee after your session.
Dow Gardens is further up in the mitten, about 2 hours from Detroit. It has beautiful flowers, a little river, some bridges, but the coolest thing? A sky bridge, this was probably one of My favorite places for photos. With only a $15/ person entrance fee you you get so much!
The Nichols Arboretum is a well known park, especially in Metro Detroit. They are well known for their peony garden, every year people from all over come and visit the peonies, painting them, taking photos, and enjoying their presence. With no entrance fee not only does this park offer peopnies in the spring but also fields, a river, and a little forest. Perfect for your photos!
Downtown Detroit has so many different spots that are breathe taking. Such as the DIA and Greek Town. But here are some Ideas for some different locations in downtown.
Campus Martius is a well known location in the winter, known for its yearly ice rink, Christmas tree lighting, and Cadillac Village. but did you know this spot is also a great place for photos in both summer and winter? Surrounded my beautiful Buildings and a short walk to the river Campus Martius has so many photo worthy spots.
The Main Detroit Public Library is located right across the DIA. This beautiful location offers vintage architecture and tons of space. There is no permit or cost needed to take your photos here but you are only allowed to take photos on the outside of the building as not to disturb library goers.
The river walk is just like the name says, its a walkway right next to the Detroit River. On the other side of the river you are able to see Canada. The walk goes through the Hart Plaza and its right next to the Renaissance building. (aka the old GM building). There is no fee to take photos here.
Belle Isle is also a pretty popular pretty close to downtown, but it has so much to offer. You do need a permit to photographer there and sometimes there is an entrance fee. Belle Isle has beaches, fields, a beautiful overlook into downtown Detroit and Downtown Windsor, as well as the Aquarium (The Oldest in the states), and the Newly renovated Anna Scripts Conservatory
We have some beautiful places in Michigan (The metro Detroit area) that will give you that cottage core look for your photos. The locations are historical Locations in Michigan that will allow you to take photos on the outside of the property for a fee.
Located in Bloomfield Hills, This beautiful gardens holds ice sculptures, fountains and an abundance of flowers. A beautiful way to describe the vibes would definitly be a pride a prejudice ort of vibe.
Session Fees: 1-4 people being photographed: $300,
5-10 people being photographed: $500,
11-16 people being photographed: $700
Located in Rochester, Meadow Brook gives you that Downton Abbey vibe but the American version. With paved pathways, florals, a historic house as your background, Meadow Brook Hall would be a beautiful location for your session.
Session fees: Groups 1-5 people: $200 for the first hour and $125 each additional hour
Groups 6-15 people: $375 for the first hour and $125 each additional hour
Groups 16-25 people: $525 for the first hour and $125 for each additional hour
A piece of Detroit history, the person that helped give Detroit it's nick name "The Motor City." This historical home allows you to take photos in their gardens outside the house for a fee. (Click the name for rates)
Newly remodeled piece of Detroit history, the Michigan Central Station is another beautiful place to take your photos. Outside the station their is no fee but if you want to take your photos inside then you will have to pay a fee of $250 per 30 min and you must book online.

What's nice about photography is it ha taken us to quite a bit of locations that we are happy to share with you. Here are some of our favorites.
What we love about Lower Huron Metro Park is it has a river going through the park that is easy to access. There are fields with tall grass where you can frolic with your loved one. And there are woods surrounding the park too! The only fee you need to pay is the entry fee into the park.
If you are a Harry Potter fan this is for you. The Law quad is Ann Arbor, Michigan's little Hogwarts. The beautiful structure truely captures that magical sense of Hogwarts (though the building was constructed before the books came out). There is no fee to shoot outside on campus, but photography is NOT permitted in the law library. Just be warned that the law quad can get very packed around graduation time (The month of May). Fun Fact: Jason and I took our bridal portraits here!
Located on the outskirts of Ann Arbor, this husband and wife owned wedding venue makes for a beautiful location for your photos. What used to be a working historic farm now turned into a wedding venue for others to enjoy. With animals, wildflowers, a pond, willow tree, and a newly renovated barn this beautiful venue is a fun setting for your photos!
This beautiful piece of Detroit history once belonged to the legendary Aretha Franklin. Recently renovated by it's new owners they kept the charm of this historic household with some modern touches. This is definitely a beautiful place to capture your photos!
With the right photographer any location can look unique. But not everyone is the same, not every couple is the same therefore not everyone is going to want the same location as everyone else. Here are some out of the box ideas.
Got a favorite coffee shop or even ice cream shop? why not grab a treat while also getting your photos taken? Just make sure its alright with staff if photos are taken indoors.
This is a great suggestion for when you want couples photos in the winter. Whether indoor or outdoor these photos turn out really cute and really goofy (if you don't know how to skate.)
Do you have a favorite mom and pop burger, hot dog, or pizza place? With permission from staff or the owners why not order a bite to eat with the guidance of your photographer these photo would be magical.
Are you both bookworms? Or maybe bonded over books? The library can make a beautiful place for photos, with the different nooks so many books and so many spaces. Just be sure to check with your local library or book shop staff and PLEASE be respectful of library goers and the BOOKS.
Do you want to find the your own location? A spot that's meant just for you. Or want to find a spot that no one has taken photos at? Here are some tips to find YOUR own photo location.
Google and Apple Maps are a great tool not only for driving directions but also for location scouting. You definitely will have to zoom in quite a bit on the maps but with it you are able to find parks and buildings that would not have popped up on google.
If you are an outdoorsy person or couple then you probably know about this app. The all trails app gives you different trails in different parks that you can hike/walk Etc. What great about this app is it tells you how long the trail is and people can post photos too!
Many photographers actually drive around when location scouting, or they will drive by a location that looks beautiful and keep that location in mind for photos. *If you do this please make sure you are not trespassing on Private property.
Do you have a hobby or fun thing you like to do or place that means a lot to you? Then do it there! Do you like puzzles or cooking with your significant other? Plan an in home session! Did you meet at a park or grocery store? Do it there! Do you like painting together or playing video games together? Do an in home session of you doing that! A good photographer *WINK WINK* will give you ideas on how to pose.
